The systematic application of continuous on-line chemical measurement techniques has many benefits in the key areas of Environmental and Process Control. The use of continuous measurement means that the potential polluter can readily demonstrate his compliance to agreed discharge consent levels. Likewise, continuous chemical processes which incorporate on-line chemical measurement within the process control loop has the potential to reduce waste and enhance process yield. It follows that for on-line monitors to be truly effective, accurate and reliable results are paramount. Regretfully, many such systems operate below their true potential as a result of using poor quality reagents and calibrants.

Of great importance is the need for these systems to produce ACCURATE results. This means that the calibration must take into consideration short term variations in performance, due to electrical, mechanical and chemical changes. Chemical variances can be controlled through the reagent manufacturer having analytical and manufacturing procedures in place, which quantify variances and enable these to be maintained within the operational characteristics of the monitor. Key to the calibration is the use of ACCURATE and TRACEABLE calibrants.

Total instrument reliability is key to the provision of real-time measurements which can be critically applied either in a Court of Law or a process feedback loop. If the instrument crucially fails, this may have disastrous consequences, resulting in the possibility of plant down time or exceeding discharge consent levels, leading to the increased plant maintenance costs or hefty fines, neither of which are desirable.
