The ROMIL PrimAg
® Philosophy

PrimAg® is essentially a new way of looking at reference materials. By establishing traceability to ultra-pure silver as a primary reference material, ROMIL have created a practical link to the internationally accepted SI unit, the mole. Many of these now feature the added benefit of UKAS accreditation to ISO 17025. All the products are offered in highly pure form using the best available ingredients. Indeed, many ingredients are already available to us in the form of ROMIL-SpS™ Super Purity Solvents or ROMIL-SpA™ Super Purity Acids. Analysts have only to decide what level of certification is required in order to demonstrate compliance with their internal quality system.

PrimAg®-xtra The highest level of certification is designated PrimAg®-xtra. The reference material is accompanied by a certificate detailing as much as we know about the product. From the calibrated assay and estimated uncertainty of the primary constituent through to an analysis of the impurities which are generally at ppb levels.
PrimAg®-plus However, many analysts will not need such comprehensive information. In their judgement of ‘fitness for purpose’ they may decide that certification of the nominal constituent(s) only will suffice. PrimAg®-plus does just that.
PrimAg®-lite Some analysts will be content with just a statement of nominal concentration(s) on the product label. This is the basic PrimAg® grade which is designed to be used as a reliable QC working reference material for routine analysis.

Mono-Component Reference Solutions

Detailed Specifications

Detailed Specifications

Prepared from pure metals, salts, and ROMIL-SpA™ super purity acids, these mono-component element reference solutions may be utilised in all types of atomic spectroscopy from AA through to ICP-MS. Likewise, the ion reference solutions are similarly formulated for application in ion chromatography (IC) and ion-selective electrode measurement (ISE). Both solution types are ideal for voltammetry.

Analysts may think that such high quality is accompanied by a high price. Not so, as our current price list will give a pleasant surprise. You will discover effectively ICP-grade reference solutions but at traditional AA prices.

After all, we want to encourage more widespread use of reference materials. Just look upon it as ROMIL’s contribution to the pursuit of quality results!

Multi-Component Reference Solutions

Detailed Specifications

Detailed Specifications

As ICP, voltammetry and ion chromatography become more of a routine technique there is a growing demand for reference solution mixes formulated to match the actual samples that analysts are working with. Especially at lower concentrations.

ROMIL provides a custom production service utilising high purity ingredients which have been characterised via the PrimAg® scheme of traceability. Solutions are available either non-certificated PrimAg®-lite or certificated as PrimAg®-plus. (PrimAg®-xtra is not available in multi-component form).

Obtaining a custom quote from ROMIL is simple. All that is needed is a list of the required elements (or anions), the preferred matrix (we target 0.5M nitric acid), and the pack size (100ml or 500ml). After reviewing the customer request for chemical compatibility issues, a price and availability is quoted, based on the number of components and their concentrations.

Analysts may well ask why they should make up these difficult solutions themselves, when ROMIL can do it for less cost and with the unique PrimAg® traceability. Some typical multi-component solutions produced to customer requirements are listed here as examples of the expertise that is available at ROMIL. Choose one or ask us to quote for your own mix.

Miscellaneous Reference Materials

Detailed Specifications

Detailed Specifications

PrimAg® stoichiometric reference materials are high purity substances which may be used to calibrate routine working reagents of, for example, ‘SA/AR/PA/ACS’ quality, thereby establishing traceability to internationally agreed SI units. (See also ROMIL-TvR™ ready to use traceable volumetric reagents).

Bearing the PrimAg®-plus designation, each substance is accompanied by a Certificate of Calibration reporting its determined assay with associated uncertainty traced to ROMIL primary silver.

Also available is a set of reference solutions for absorbance calibration of UV/Visible spectrophotometers and HPLC detectors.

  Suggested usage guide
PrimAg®-xtra For use as a certified secondary reference material in ICP applications and only available with the mono-component elemental (metal) reference solutions. Supplied with a Certificate of Calibration detailing the concentration of the nominal element with corresponding uncertainty. Also gives additional information on metallic impurities as determined by ICP-MS giving the raw data with no correction made for interferences. This allows analysts to make their own corrections according to the specific circumstances of their analysis.
PrimAg®-plus For mono-component solutions, use as a certified secondary reference material in AA, voltammetry, ion chromatography or ion-selective electrode applications. Multi-component solutions are designed for use in ICP spectroscopy, voltammetry and ion chromatography. Supplied with a Certificate of Calibration detailing only the concentration of the nominal element(s) or ion(s) with corresponding uncertainty. No information is provided for impurities.
PrimAg®-lite Both mono- and multi-component solutions are proposed for use as a QC working reference material in all routine atomic spectroscopy, voltammetry, ion chromatography and ion-selective electrode measurement. No certification is provided.
Really Need a Second Source ?

If the PrimAg® reference material of interest has ISO 17025 accreditation by UKAS, then you should not need a second source. Nevertheless, we recognise that a second source for key materials is a well established principle within modern quality management systems and is certainly appropriate for non-accredited materials. So what do you do if you have only the one source?

At ROMIL we understand your problem. So for our PrimAg® reference solutions we offer a multi-lot option whereby we supply you with material made from separate batches that have been manufactured independently of each other. Alternatively, if you already have one batch and would like a separate one then we'll do that too.

Just specify your requirement clearly on your order and we will do the rest.
